Well, Here I am in Swakopmund, Namibia. It is a very trending and pretty seaside town. The homes along the beach are beautiful and it reminds me of Southern California. It has a heavy German influence and the town itself reminds me of Carlsbad, California. The gale force winds remind me of a hurricane.
Our guide, Johann, is a 4th generation Afrikaner from Namibia. He is pretty knowledgeable and very accommodating. I am also traveling with Fran, a principal from Edmunton, Alberta. We drove through savannah and desert. It looked like the desert in Arizona and New Mexico. We saw a few baboons and some springbok. It was about a 4 hour ride. Like Windhoek, there is little to do and the town rolls up the streets at 6 PM.
Early morning tomorrow.
Breakfast and off to Cape Cross Seal Reserve. There had to be a least 1000 seals all over the beach. It was fantastic. I could have watched them for hours. They were sleeping and playing. It is a breeding ground so all the babies were there as well. On the way we passed a ship wreck. It was all so interesting.
Leaving Cape Cross, the rest of the road to Vingerklip was a dirt road. 250 kilometers of dirt road! We came upon a car roll over. There were about 9 people in this pick-up truck. Several were badly hurt. Johann called an ambulance. We waited about 40 minutes and then friends of Johann came along and they stayed until the ambulance came. It was pretty gruesome.
Along the rest of the way, saw meercats (Timon), springbok, and a desert chameleon. The terrain went from desert to savannah to a hilly savannah- all dry. It was 8 hours in the car today. We arrived at the Vingerlift Lodge about 4:00 PM. My room is beautiful with a great view. I walked up the mountain using the stairs to get to the top. I amazed myself.
I am now getting ready to go to dinner. This will be my last post until Wednesday. There are no pictures to day as the internet connection is slow. I will make up for it
